Key traits of high performing teams

With 24 years of experience in small and large corporations and startups, I have transitioned from a beginner to a leader. Throughout this journey, I have learned that high-performing teams share several key traits that distinguish them from others. These traits are essential for achieving success and maintaining performance, and I would like to share them with you.

First and foremost, communication is the foundation of any strong team. In my experience, quick and efficient communication is critical. Teams that connect swiftly, discuss their objectives and outcomes, and engage in brief, effective interactions are the ones that maintain momentum.

Collaboration is equally important. Establishing clear individual and team goals is essential to ensuring alignment among team members. They should complement each other’s strengths and focus on results rather than personal achievements. In my career, I have seen firsthand that when collaboration is strong, the team accomplishes much more than the sum of its efforts.

Trust has been a fundamental pillar of my career. When teams engage in respectful conflict and productive conversations, trust develops. Authentic connections between team members significantly enhance their ability to face challenges and celebrate successes together.

Respect is non-negotiable. I have consistently found that performance improves when team members appreciate one another and feel a sense of belonging. Transparency is key to ensuring everyone is on the same page, which minimizes confusion and fosters a culture of openness.

Lastly, adopting a mindset of getting better has profoundly influenced my career. Teams should always strive to learn from their experiences, focus on incremental enhancements, and track progress. Continuous improvement is vital for long-term success, and I have always championed it in the teams I have worked with.

These principles have been integral to my evolution from a beginner to a leader in startups and established corporations, and they can significantly enhance any team’s performance.
